 sheep drawing

I just ran accross an interesting project by artist, Aaron Koblin, called “The Sheep Market.”  He used Amazon’s Mechanical Turk website, to request that people “draw a sheep facing to the left” for $0.02 per drawing.   (more…)

It’s true - people do judge a book by its cover. Photogrpahy and graphics have a great influence on the buying decisions during shelf-browsing. But how many times have you been disappointed by what goes beyond the attractive first impression? Check the website below to see how accurately you can guess a good book by judging its cover (the application compares your rating with the Amazon rating of the respective book).

Note: “good:” is here rather a measure of marketability (popularity).

flash-fur

I recently came across these very impressive fur renderings by Flash developers Andre Michelle and Luis Martinez.  Basically they break images into millions of particles and then trace a path for each particle using that particle’s color.  You can view Andre’s collection here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/93579423@N00/sets/72157608481995223/ and Luis’s experiment here: http://www.lessrain.com/projects/luis/algorithm/liverender/ .   …Pretty nice.

While we’re on the subject of visualizing sound, you may enjoy watching this interesting video :

The artist and experimentor featured here is Norman McLaren,  a pinoneer in animation and sound.  While you are there, check out some of Mclarens’ animations.  They are quite extraordinary considering they were all hand-crafted beginning in the 1930s,  before technology made these things somewhat easy.

In the 6 years I’ve been in the world of digital art & computer science, I’ve seen a monotony of music visualizers.  Though I appreciate the labor, very few are very impressive.  This growing set of visualizers created for the new music site entitled, Bandcamp is an exception.  Check them out here: http://nicomuhly.bandcamp.mu/ .   To see the visualizers click the “Cover Art” link under the large cover image.
