…I am already “UPDATE-NOW-NUTS”.

Petra is not a web designer or any other kind of artist usually writes here. She is one of the millions PC users in our offices all around the world. She likes her work, her computer and her software. She doesn’t hate the Mac nor does she have major problems with the PC. However there are a couple of things that drive her crazy. Update-mania for example…

Do you know this too? First thing in the morning you are sitting at your computer in order to work off your To-Do-List and then it comes: A window pops up and requires downloading and installing the newest version of the software. The request is always the same: If you want to use specific functions in the future you have to load the newest version now. All in all this is extremely irritating. Sometimes you lose settings and sometimes … let’s say Murphy’s Law is in full action.

Of course, you always can click the button „No Thank You, No Update“. However, there are some applications that are not disturbed by this. A few days later they simply pop up again and irritate you.

Download and installation are not necessarily the most time consuming problems. The most time is used to restart the computer after downloading and installing. After the computer restarted you have to wait till all programs needed for your daily work are back up too and till Outlook has finished downloading all data packages from the server, ASO. Twenty minutes later you can finally start working.

Another great topic is Internet Explorers. Did anyone realize that different web based applications cling to specific browsers?

A great example is QuickBooks Online which runs only in the Internet Explorer but not in Mozilla Firefox. Why? Who knows but here is the answer from QuickBooks:

„System requirements:

To use QuickBooks Online, Simple Start Online, and Intuit Online Payroll, you need the following:

  • Windows Vista, XP, or 2000.
  • Internet Explorer for Windows, version 6 or later. If necessary, please download it here.”

Excuse me, but why Vista?

Why does is not work simply like this: All manufacturers agree on a monthly national Update-Day, e.g. every last Friday of the month. Then you can show up in jeans and update. And finally, when you are through with it you swing by the bar around the corner and exchange update stories with the other guests. Slowly but surely you can make the transition from you work week into the weekend.

And on Monday morning you are greeted by a pop-up from Intuit telling us: „On the last Friday of the month QuickBooks will issue paychecks which are 10% more than normal; in each browser you like. That would be wonderful.
