The Morphing Girl
1 - Beauty
Client: Ardis Creative
This image was included in an Ardis brochure to present our retouching services to photographers and art directors in South Florida. We took a plain, unretouched stock photo and gave it a full beauty treatment: skin retouching, color correction, alteration of the face’s shape and emphasis on the best features.
2 - Water Mask
Client: Ardis Creative
Starting with the last step of the previous beauty treatment, we decided to build a surreal world around our model. We rebuilt her forehead and changed her hairstyle on one side, while from the other side we painted a porcelain mask to follow her features. The seascape was composited from several different photos. Check the tutorial in our blog.
3 - Desert Aquarium
Client: Ardis Creative
To create this surreal composition, we used the reconstructed head from the previous composition (Water Mask). Then we decided to turn one side of the face into a fish tank, complete with goldfish and a fishing boat. Much painting was involved to create an aquarium to follow her features. Many elements were created from scratch in Photoshop.
4 - Hourglass Tornado
Client: Ardis Creative
For this approach, we started from two different directions: one version of the head turned into a surreal game of vegetation and birds, while another version we made into mechanic clockwork. They both went to fill an hourglass, around which we created a whimsical surreal landscape.
Resolute
1 - Rowers Ashore
Client: Resolute Racing Shells
Ardis retouched a series of seven images for a campaign to promote the Resolute products. For this specific image, we combined several different exposures to create a perfect balance of the composition and colors, while adding details to create a more dramatic atmosphere.
2 - Hero Rower
Client: Resolute Racing Shells
Second in the row of seven images Ardis retouched for the Resolute campaign, this composition required merging of several different images to create a dramatic photograph. The sky was replaced, the dock removed and the water extended to the horizon, and all the details we tuned to perfection.
3 - Bathhouse Dock
Client: Resolute Racing Shells
Third in the row of seven images Ardis retouched for the Resolute campaign, this composition involved transplanting a new background behind the hero, to create a dramatic, intense atmosphere, using several different photos provided.
4 - Rowers Team (1)
Client: Resolute Racing Shells
As with the rest of the Resolute photos that Ardis retouched, it was important, in this composition as well, to achieve a dramatic atmosphere, while ensuring the perfection of the details. Again, several different photos were skillfully combined to create a polished final photograph.
5 - Rowers Team (2)
Client: Resolute Racing Shells
The fifth image of the project involved two exposures with different depths of field, bringing a sharp fence and a more dramatic sky in the final image. Retouching was focused on skin and eyes, and overall lighting and mood.
6 - Bathhouse (1))
Client: Resolute Racing Shells
The sixth image of the Resolute project image was composited of three different shots (model, bathhouse and group of rowers). The model’s skin, eyes, hair and shirt were important steps in the process, as well as creating the lighting effect and filling the gaps in the shelves with more boats.
7 - Bathhouse (2))
Client: Resolute Racing Shells
The last image of the Resolute project kept much of the original atmosphere, but focused on skin retouching and also on correcting the background’s composition to give it a more harmonic feel.
2 Live Crew
1 – Airport Shot
Client: 2 Live Crew
Ardis retouched two images for the group’s upcoming album. The cover image was composited with photos taken at the Ft. Lauderdale Executive Airport. The retouching work included balancing the lights and shadows, adding lights in the background, a lot of very detailed, spot-on, corrections, and generally creating the desired mood.
2 – Solid Gold
Client: 2 Live Crew
This image was composited with four different shots, one for the rap stars, one for each girl and one especially exposed for the background. It was important to maintain and add to the general feeling of sparkle and “bling”. Much in-detail retouching was necessary, as well as enhancement of the colors.
Regent
1 – Day
Client: Regent Hotel, Boston
An advertisement for the new Regent luxury hotel in Boston, in this photograph the model was brought to the foreground, while the rest of the retouching ensured the finesse of the details (skin, smoothing of the wrinkles in the clothes, slight adjustment of the verticals).
2 – Night
Client: Regent Hotel, Boston
Another advertisement for the Regent hotel, this photograph needed the replacement of the window view with one provided in a different exposure. The window grid was removed and the landscape beneath repainted, and more lights were added to enhance the atmosphere. The model’s skin was also retouched and the muscles were softened.
Fiore
1 - Fiore
Client: Fiore
For this image of the singer Fiore, the photographer had already captured the perfect composition and the desired color hues. In the retouching process, the main focus points were the skin and the eyes, to create a very modern, glamorous feel. A typical beauty-style retouching project.
Gimaex Trucks
1 – 100 ft Aerial Truck(1)
Client: Gimaex
Ardis retouched numerous photographs for the new Gimaex USA website. The truck in this picture was assembled from two shots taken during a tradeshow, then it placed against a new background. The truck’s body needed a great deal of retouching, including the replacement of the tradeshow reflections with reflections of the sky.
2 – Hazmat Truck
Client: Gimaex
Most of the Gimaex pictures that Ardis retouched were not taken professionally; therefore they needed much work in recovering colors and repairing lighting. This particular truck needed to be placed into an environment more worthy of its purpose. The pavement was created in Photoshop from scratch, and large areas of the vehicle’s body were repainted.
3 – Rescue Pumper
Client: Gimaex
This rapid intervention vehicle equipped with a foam system needed to be taken out of the original background, and placed into a new one that enhances the features of this truck. It benefits from a more dramatic sky, symbolizing the fire battles this machine defeats, and of an overall darker atmosphere, which emphasizes the colors of the body.
4 – RIV
Client: Gimaex
This rapid intervention vehicle was placed in a new background, a more dramatic one that emphasizes the truck’s features. The floor was generated in Photoshop and the sky comes from stock photography. The overall atmosphere emphasizes the red of the body and the clouds converge with the angle of the machine, creating a sense of dynamism.
5 - Air Crash Tender
Client: Gimaex
This picture features a high performing Gimaex vehicle. It was taken out of a tradeshow context and placed in a dramatic fire scene, shot by firefighting photographer Glenn Ellman. The retouching was slightly challenging, as most of the metal and glass needed to be re-drawn in Photoshop to remove unwanted reflections.
6 – 100 ft Aerial Truck(2)
Client: Gimaex
The original image was shot during a tradeshow outdoor exhibit, in limited space and under unfavorable weather conditions. During the retouching process, the background was removed and replaced with a dramatic “fiery” sky, which was also reflected into the reconditioned body of the truck. The logo was replaced to fit in full.
7 – 100 ft Aerial Truck(3)
Client: Gimaex
The background of the original shot was removed and replaced with a more dramatic sky, while the asphalt extends to the horizon line. The main challenge in retouching this image was removing the tradeshow’s reflections in the truck’s body and windows and adding, instead, sky reflections to fit the new environment.
Frankenstein
1 - Frankenstein
Client: Ardis Creative
An illustration for the first Ardis newsletter, on the topic “How Flash animation revives the dead”, this picture of Frankenstein started with a good stock photo. The hair, the stitches, the metal bar and the extra blood drops were all painted in Photoshop. The rest was a matter of coloring and of lighting adjustments
Gimaex Group
1 - Gimaex Group
Client: Gimaex
This shot of the Gimaex team was transplanting into a new background that accentuates the expressivity of the peoples' attitudes, especially through the contrast of the soft clouds and strong silhouettes. Some of the people were placed from similar shots, where their expression was better fitted to the concept.
